Constructing a garden wall may look like a simple task, but it takes genuine craft to build one that stays safe, level and beautiful for the long term. The foundation is the cornerstone of any durable wall, and our skilled, reliable bricklayers in Cardiff take the guesswork and the hard labour out of the job. We specialise in constructing, repairing and revamping garden walls Cardiff homeowners can rely on, alongside external brick walls, retaining walls and metal railings.

What garden walls and brickwork involve, and why they suit Cardiff homes

Garden walls and brickwork cover everything from a low decorative boundary at the front of the house to a structural retaining wall holding back a sloping garden. In practice it means proper bricklaying or blockwork on a solid footing, finished to a standard that handles the Welsh weather year after year. Cardiff and the wider valleys have plenty of sloping plots, terraced streets and exposed corner sites, and a good wall does real work on all of them: it levels a garden, frames a driveway or patio, adds privacy and security, and gives the property a finished, premium look from the kerb. Brick and stone also age gracefully, which is why they sit so naturally alongside the city's traditional housing stock.

Materials, styles and options

We work with a wide range of materials so the finished wall suits both your property and your budget. We can match the brick to your home or create a deliberate contrast, and we are happy to advise on what will look right in your particular street or garden.

  • Facing and engineering brick in a broad choice of colours and textures
  • Reclaimed and hand-made bricks for character and for matching older walls
  • Yellow stock and other traditional bricks common to Cardiff properties
  • Natural stone and dressed stone for a softer, rural feel
  • Concrete blockwork as a cost-effective core, ready to be rendered or faced
  • Brick or stone piers and copings to finish the wall neatly and shed water

Retaining walls for sloping gardens

Where a garden steps up or down, a retaining wall holds the ground in place and turns an awkward slope into usable, level space. These walls do a structural job, so they need correct foundations, the right thickness and proper drainage behind them to relieve water pressure. We build retaining walls to suit the load they carry, whether that is a raised border, a terraced lawn or a level patio created from a banked garden.

Walls for railings

An external brick garden wall can also serve as a base for traditional metal railings, including Victorian style wrought iron. We offer a wide range of brick types to suit your needs and budget, and we set the wall and any fixings so the railings sit straight and secure for years to come.

Rendering for a smooth, modern finish

Rendering gives a wall a clean, smooth surface that can be painted to match your home. It is an excellent option if you want a contemporary look, or a sensible way to keep costs down, since sound but less attractive bricks or blocks can be used where the wall will be rendered and painted over. We can render new walls or refresh existing ones that have seen better days.

Reclaimed brick, repairs and matching

If you are refurbishing an existing wall, matching new bricks to the old ones is crucial for keeping its original character. We can match and supply most types of brick, from hand-made reclaimed to yellow stock, so repairs blend in rather than stand out. We also rebuild leaning, cracked or frost-damaged sections, and we are not limited to straight lines: we can build curves, piers and intricate patterns to give a carefully landscaped garden its finishing touch.

How the installation works

Every project starts with a free, no-obligation visit. We measure up, talk through your ideas and the practical points such as height, drainage and how the wall ties in with the rest of the garden, then give you a clear quote.

Groundwork and foundations

We start by marking out the line of the wall and excavating a trench to a suitable depth for the height and type of wall. A poured concrete footing gives the wall a firm, level base, which is what stops settlement, leaning and cracking later on. Getting this stage right is the single biggest factor in how long a wall lasts.

Drainage

Water is the main enemy of any masonry, so good drainage is built in from the start. On retaining walls in particular we allow for water to escape from behind the wall using weep holes or a drainage layer, which relieves the pressure that would otherwise push against it. This matters in our wet Welsh climate, where standing water and frost will find any weakness over time.

Building, edging and finish

We then lay the brick or block course by course, keeping everything level and plumb, with neat, consistent mortar joints. Where the wall meets a driveway, path or border we tie in clean edging so the transition looks deliberate and stays tidy. Finally we add the finishing touches, copings or rendering as agreed, point the joints, and leave the site clean and clear.

Maintenance and durability

A properly built brick or stone wall needs very little looking after. Brickwork is naturally hard wearing, and the combination of a solid footing, good drainage and well struck mortar joints is what keeps it sound for decades. From time to time it is worth checking the pointing and clearing any drainage points so they do not block, and a rendered or painted wall will benefit from a fresh coat every few years to keep it looking its best. If an older wall does show cracks, leaning or frost damage, it is best dealt with early, and we are always happy to take a look and advise.

Frequently asked questions

What affects the cost of a garden wall?

The main factors are the length and height of the wall, the type of brick or stone you choose, and whether it is a simple boundary wall or a structural retaining wall that needs deeper foundations and drainage. Access to the site, ground conditions, and finishes such as copings, piers or rendering also play a part. We give a clear, itemised quote after a free visit so you know exactly what is included, with no surprises.

Do I need planning permission for a garden wall?

It depends on the height and the location. As a general rule, walls next to a road or footpath are limited to a lower height than walls elsewhere in the garden before permission is needed, and rules can differ if your home is listed or in a conservation area. We are happy to talk through the practical side during your free visit and point you in the right direction, but for anything borderline we would always suggest checking with Cardiff Council.

How long does it take to build a garden wall?

It varies with the size and type of wall and the weather, since masonry needs reasonable conditions to set properly. A short boundary wall is a quick job, while a longer run, a retaining wall or work that involves groundwork and drainage will take longer. We give you a realistic timescale with your quote and keep you informed at every stage.

Can you match the brick on my existing wall or house?

In most cases, yes. We can match and supply most types of brick, from hand-made reclaimed to yellow stock and other traditional bricks common on Cardiff properties, so repairs and extensions blend in rather than stand out. If an exact match is not possible we will show you the closest options before any work begins.

Can you build a retaining wall on a sloping garden?

Yes, retaining walls are one of our specialities. They turn an awkward slope into usable, level space and need proper foundations, the right thickness and good drainage behind them to cope with water pressure. We build each retaining wall to suit the ground it is holding back and the load it needs to carry.

Do you offer a guarantee and which areas do you cover?

Our workmanship is backed by a guarantee, and we are fully insured. We are based in Llanrumney, Cardiff, and cover the whole city and South Wales, including Penarth, Barry, Caerphilly, Cowbridge, the Vale of Glamorgan, Porthcawl, Llantwit Major and Newport.
